Marked by a rich history and packed with plenty of things to eat, see and do, Kwun Tong should be the next area you explore on Kowloon side.<\/h2>\n

Full of history, Kwun Tong has roots dating back to before Hong Kong\u2019s establishment as a city-state and any of its development. Formerly a salt production centre back in the 1200s<\/strong>, the district\u2019s coast has been a hub for fishermen and sailors alike. Part of the district then morphed into a factory area, filled up by creatives<\/a> looking to embark upon entrepreneurial ventures<\/a>. Since then, the area has undergone modern development<\/strong>, and is now an eclectic mishmash of old creaky buildings<\/strong><\/a> and creative businesses, with\u00a0skyscrapers<\/strong> divided into offices (not so unlike those found in Central and Admiralty)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re looking to explore a bit of local history or hoping to check out some new places to eat and shop, we\u2019ve done our research and have found our favourite and most interesting places to hit up in this Kowloon neighbourhood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Jeonpo Meat Shop<\/h2>\n

A favourite of our Partnerships team, Jeonpo Meat Shop is one of the best Korean BBQ<\/a> spots <\/strong>in Hong Kong, let alone Kwun Tong. It offers a variety of ready-to-grill meats<\/strong> that are both juicy and tender (cooked by skilled servers)<\/em>, plus a whole host of drool-worthy Korean side dishes \u2014 we particularly love the Kimchi fried rice<\/strong>! If you\u2019re on the hunt for a hidden gem to impress some out-of-town friends<\/a><\/strong>, Factory 99 is a good place to start. Literally located in a factory building,\u00a0the restaurant serves comfort food, such as New Zealand ribeye steak, grilled salmon fillet and crab risotto, guaranteeing you leave satisfied.<\/p>\n

Harbour Dessert<\/h2>\n

For a bit of local flavour, head over to Harbour Dessert to indulge your sweet tooth. Usually open from the afternoon until late<\/strong> (or should we say, early!<\/em>) into the wee hours of the morning, dessert shops serving traditional sweet soups and creative treats are popular city wide. Harbour Dessert in Kwun Tong comes highly recommended, and our favourites include the traditional Black Sesame Sweet Soup<\/strong> (ji ma wu<\/em>) and the classic Mango Sago<\/strong> (mong guo sai mai lo<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Shiu Heung Yuen Bakery<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re in the Praya Road area of Lei Yue Mun, be sure to check out this traditional Chinese bakery<\/strong>. Once abundant, these bakeries are now a rare breed that are almost extinct in the city. In addition to serving classics such as sweet, flaky wife cakes and crumbling almond cookies<\/strong>, Shiu Heung Yuen is also well known for its egg roll cookies<\/strong>, which come in cardboard boxes. Be sure to pick up a box to take home (if it lasts that long)<\/em>!<\/p>\n

With an increasing number of branches popping up all over the city, it’s clear that Hongkongers love this Swiss Italian Grotto<\/strong> and all it has to offer. With snacks and small bites ranging arancini Ticinese and wagyu beef tartare<\/strong> to malakoff and veal tongue tonatto<\/strong>, it can be a struggle to make sure you still have room for the hearty mains<\/strong>!
