What To Know About Getting A Piercing In Hong Kong

  • Do some research before getting pierced — about the type of piercing, how you will be pierced (say, with a piercing gun or needle plus the method of piercing!), and the expected pain and time it’ll take to heal.
  • Eat something before you go. It keeps your blood sugar steady so you won’t get dizzy or faint. And try to get a good night of sleep.
  • Have your piercer walk you through the way you’ll be pierced and show you how everything is sterilised. Discuss placement and the first jewellery you’ll be fitted with and when you can change the jewellery. It’s worth paying more for titanium or gold for your piercing, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Expect a little pain! Better to be mentally prepared and ready than to be shocked.
  • Aftercare is so important. A piercing is a wound and infections can lead to scarring on the face and body. Be sure to consult your piercer about their recommended ways of cleaning and disinfecting your piercing, and how to take care of it. If you’re unsure, reach out to them after with any updates and don’t be afraid to ask “silly” questions — like their favourite products and methods!
  • Don’t worry if you see a little bleeding or irritation, but keep an eye out for discolouration; secretion of white, yellow or green fluid; heat; swelling and excessive pain.

EstheClinic is one of Hong Kong’s favourite med spas for a reason — the French family business was built on painless treatments, no hard sell and a director who really listens.

EstheClinic has been in Solène Verrot’s extended family for over twenty years. Founded in France by her cousin-in-law, Manon Allano, the med spa has grown into a beauty empire across continents. Prior to entering the family business, Solène had an enviable career of her own — law, then advertising — but when the opportunity came to bring the French brand to Hong Kong in 2019, she took it. Today, Verrot and her husband manage three EstheClinic locations across the city, building on its reputation as a painless beauty powerhouse.

The French Blueprint That Survived Covid

EstheClinic started over twenty years ago in France, building a name for itself by offering clients visible results without surgery. Solène brought that same blueprint to Hong Kong, opening her first clinic just months before the pandemic hit. While other businesses struggled to remain open, Solène spotted an opening — lower rent meant she could launch the Sai Ying Pun ground-floor branch. That move turned a business-crushing circumstance into an opportunity and (spoiler alert), all three locations continue to thrive today.

What Sets EstheClinic Apart In Hong Kong

As for what’s made EstheClinic survive — through Covid, but also within Hong Kong’s saturated beauty market —  Solène believes it comes down to local customers refusing to settle. Hongkongers are known for keeping up-to-date on the latest trends, comparing clinics across cities and clocking it when if something feels off. In a culture of hard selling, with quick assessments, pressure to buy and little focus on the actual client experience, EstheClinic flips that model. The dedicated, English-speaking team begins each treatment by listening to what’s really going on with their clients: trained to deliver the highest standard of care, the consultants and beauticians know that surface-level skin concerns often reveal something deeper, whether that be stress or major life transitions.

Prioritising Results Over Sales Pitches

Because of Solène’s model, EstheClinic is known for its client relationships. There’s no pressure to buy and no awkward sales pitch at the end of your session. Instead, clients receive genuine care,  backed by a team that follows through on every concern and explains what’s realistic.

Whether you’re looking for face and body treatments or permanent hair removal, treatments at EstheClinic are painless and built to last. Experience it for yourself with our exclusive Sassy readers perk:

We’re calling it now: hand care is the new skincare. While much of the internet’s obsession is with a 10-step skincare routine, PDRN and retinol boosters, there’s an overlooked area that reveals more about you than any serum ever could — your hands.

Widely regarded as the ‘unsung heroes’ of the body, your hands are constantly exposed to harsh environmental conditions — from astringent dishwashing liquids, handwashes in malls and airports and being exposed to UV rays while you’re enjoying a leisurely lunch on an alfresco terrace — your hands go through it all! But though delicate in nature, and second only to the face in their level of exposure, “they remain the most frequently forgotten part of a daily skincare regimen,” says Mandy Cupper, Aesop’s Global Director of Production Innovation. Despite this, the rise of quiet luxury and beauty trends has transformed care towards the most overlooked part of the body into a marker of status and luxury. From hand balms to cuticle oils worthy of a spot on your vanity, hand care deserves a place in the skincare ritual performed every night — and Team Sassy’s giving you the scoop on why, how to elevate your routine and the products you need!

Read More: Team Sassy’s High-Maintenance Hacks To Stay Low-Maintenance

The quiet status symbol

The care we devote to our hands touches on two deeply human impulses: ego and self-care. As Suzanne Santos, co-founder of Aesop, so poignantly puts it, “looking down and witnessing the passage of time on our hands is not always an easy view.”

The appearance of a hand has always been an aesthetic consideration. Many of us deliberate over nail length, shape and style, plus whether to go for gel nails or bare and which accessories to wear. But as beauty trends shift toward minimalism, so too has our perception of what makes hands look truly luxurious. Gone are the days of maximalist, 3D, hyperlong extensions. In their place lie groomed cuticles and softly buffed, polish-free nails that suggest effortlessness rather than excess.

Much like the wider obsession with quiet luxury, bare nails have become a subtle marker of prestige. They imply maintenance over decoration and care over spectacle.  Such a cultural shift signals that beauty is becoming less about obvious display and more about understated upkeep. And in that evolution, hand care has emerged as the new status symbol.

peach hand cream kuoca

But hand care is more than just about signalling quiet luxury or preserving a youthful appearance, it’s a moment rooted in self-care. More so than just warding off unwanted sun spots and uncomfortable dryness, it offers a small but meaningful act of self-love: a daily ritual of nourishment. Where hand care differs from its facial counterpart is in repetition. Each time you reach for a hand cream, whether at your desk, on the MTR or before bed, you’re carving out a small ritual of restoration amid the rush of the day. So when the day feels long, and you can’t pause for an elaborate beauty ritual, pause for your hands instead.

How to elevate your hand care routine

If you’re ready to invest in this small but meaningful ritual, we turned to the experts at Aesop for guidance on which ingredients are worth seeking out. According to Cupper, the key lies in “identifying genuine unmet needs,” whether that means boosting moisture levels, improving texture or finding a formula with the right consistency for your everyday use. Speaking about the newly launched Solais Replenishing Hand Serum, she explains, “We have taken the advanced science and ingredients ordinarily reserved for facial treatments — such as niacinamide, LHA and dandelion root — and applied that same intensity of care to the hands.”

handcare, skincare, beauty, wellness, aesop handcare

These skincare-grade ingredients are precisely why hand care is beginning to mirror facial skincare. Ingredients such as Niacinamide to brighten and strengthen the skin barrier, LHA to gently exfoliate and Dandelion Root to offer antioxidant support not only complement facial care, but also to care for the hardest-working part of your skin (second to the feet!).

Beyond these ingredients, Team Sassy also loves ceramides to restore the skin barrier, shea butter for deep nourishment and peptides to support firmness and elasticity. Don’t forget also, if you’re jetting off on a beach holiday or spending more time outdoors, a hand cream with SPF 30 or higher is essential for protecting against UV-induced pigmentation. It’s important to consider the climate when choosing a hand cream. For a city like Hong Kong, where humidity is an everyday feat, texture matters just as much as ingredients. Cupper recommends choosing “a hand balm without any heavy or cumbersome residue,” allowing you to enjoy a moment of self-care throughout the day without leaving greasy fingerprints on your keyboard, phone or door handles.

While skincare may have begun with our faces, beauty and wellness trends highlight the cultural impact of holistic self-care, one where glowing skin doesn’t stop at our jawlines — and neither should the care we give ourselves. Caring for them is more than a beauty trend, rather it is a small acknowledgement of everything the body does for us.

Tired of reading ‘fragrance favourites’ lists where each perfume costs more than rent? Us too. That’s why we’ve curated our top five scent dupes from local and regional brands — because if you’re going to spend the money, it may as well go somewhere close to home!

No matter what the Fragrantica reviews say, you shouldn’t have to consider selling a kidney to afford a good bottle perfume. Tom Ford, Le Labo and Byredo scents make every ‘must-buy list’, but a new wave of Asian fragrance brands is taking over Hong Kong and beyond, serving up scents that rival the big names. From water-based local concoctions with Causeway Bay storefronts to Chinese heritage houses and sustainable local brands, here are the dupes that deserve a spot in your rotation.

hetras Santal Fresh perfume dupe for le labo santal 33

Instead of Le Labo Santal 33 … Try hetras Santal Fresh

If you love Le Labo’s cult classic, leathery wood scent of but hate its $1,500 price tag (for 50ml, no less!), try Korean brand hetras — a fave of G-Dragron! The Santal Fresh scent has gone viral on Threads, with users swearing it’s nearly identical to Le Labo original. Both the body wash ($108) and textile perfume ($88) captures Santal 33’s creamy, musky sandalwood vibe without the aggressive punch.

Sundalo Rains in Heaven perfume dupe for yves saint laurent libre

Instead of Yves Saint Laurent Libre … Try Sundalo Rains in Heaven

Thai brand Sundalo is a rising star in the regional fragrance scene, and its scent ‘Rains in Heaven’ ($499) offers a fresher, more tropical alternative to YSL’s ever-popular Libre ($1,210). While Libre is known for its intoxicating mix of lavender, orange blossom and vanilla musk, Rains in Heaven’s clean musk and jasmine heart make for an equally sensual, but airier floral scent — at a significantly lower price point.

Scent by Six 123 Tribeca perfume dupe for dolce and gabbana light blue

Instead of Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue … Try Scent by Six 123 Tribeca

Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue ($800) is the quintessential summer scent, but Scent by Six’s 123 Tribeca ($412) is as close to a dupe as one could come. Both open with fresh ripe citrus, but are tamed by identical middle and base notes of rosemary, oakmoss and Brazillian rosewood. What’s more, the Singapore brand only uses 100% sustainable packaging!

Nonfiction Santal Cream perfume dupe for Diptyque Philosykos

Instead of Diptyque Philosykos … Try Nonfiction Santal Cream

Diptyque’s Philosykos ($1,650) is the ultimate creamy fig and coconut wood scent. Korean cult favourite Nonfiction (huge in Seoul!) offers Santal Cream — which may like sandalwood, but its fig leaf and bergamot opening is seriously similar to Philosykos. Even better, Nonfiction’s $890 version adds a soft, clean skin musk that makes it wear lighter in Hong Kong humidity.

If you love Aesop Hwyl ($1,235+) for its cypress, vetiver and earthy woods, Hong Kong’s own RAZE has a water-based perfume with a striking resemblance. Not only is Mossy Haven a fraction of the price ($598), it  also delivers Hwyl’s same damp forest floor ethos with notes of moss, white pine and lotus. And who doesn’t want to support local brands?

We’ll never tire of the ‘high maintenance to be low maintenance’ beauty trend. Check out our lazy-girl shortcuts that actually work — tried and tested by us, and suited to Hong Kong lives, humidity and budgets.

Instagram is full of ‘high-maintenance hacks to stay low maintenance,’ but what’s a girl in Hong Kong to do when they require an Amazon Prime subscription, a Target run or materials you just can’t find here? Even if we could participate, Hongkongers have unique concerns to consider: humidity, sweaty commutes, tiny flats and, of course, even smaller budgets. But don’t fret, we’ve rounded up the best tips and tricks to look and feel like a million bucks, without the million-dollar price tag.

Ultra-shiny, minty formulas are everywhere, especially translucent sheen paired with bold lip liners for that juicy, no-makeup-makeup finish. The Sephora Collection Outrageous Plump Lip Gloss ($130) is a great starting point — volumising, fresh-scented and very satisfying to wear.

Peach-toned correctors are the under-eye hero of the season — brightening, depuffing and making you look like you had a solid eight hours of sleep! When the weather heats up, and your makeup starts running, semi-permanent makeup is becoming a fast go-to! Not only is it a sweat-proof option, but treatments like microblading, lip blush and lashline tattooing are quickly becoming the ultimate low-maintenance upgrade.

Also known as cosmetic tattooing, semi-permanent makeup enhances your natural features by depositing pigment into the skin to create soft, long-lasting definition, popularly used to create fuller-looking (or neater-looking!) brows, naturally flushed lips and subtly defined eyes — without the need for an extensive makeup routine. While these treatments fade gradually over time, they also offer a speedy alternative to trying to ‘heat-proof’ your makeup in the coming summer months! Whether you’re after feathered brows, a diffused lip tint or a discreet lashliner, the key is choosing experienced artists who prioritise precision, skin health and the results you’re after. Ahead, we’ve rounded up the best places in Hong Kong for semi-permanent makeup, so you can wake up looking effortlessly put together, every single day!
