Once an unassuming stall and now a major restaurant, Under Bridge Spicy Crab has been a firm favourite with Sassy families for years and one we keep coming back to. It has a full menu of delicious seafood to choose from, and while it can be tricky to decide what to go for, you really can’t go wrong with its signature Spicy Crab (you can adjust the heat level to suit your tastes). It used to be open until dawn, but now it winds down at 1am – still late enough to get some messy eating in before calling it a night!

Ichiran – Slurp down ramen all day and night (and very late at night)

There are few things as comforting as a piping hot bowl of Ichiran’s famous Tonkotsu Ramen when your head is a little muddled and tired and your feet are aching. Slide into a solo booth, customise your bowl to your exact specifications – from spice level (we usually go for six to eight ‘times’, but it’s not recommended if you don’t regularly have and enjoy spicy food!) to consistency, noodle thickness and toppings – and slurp away. Bear in mind, you’ll likely have to wait in a queue, sometimes even at super off-peak hours. But either way, kae-dama, anyone?

Burger Joys – Burgers, fries and milkshakes in Wan Chai

When talking about comfort food, we can’t gloss over burgers. It’s so sinfully good to tuck into a juicy patty at Burger Joys, whether it’s beef, chicken mushroom or fish. It really doesn’t hurt that this casual American diner-like spot also has a nice selection of fries, including Black Truffle (our favourite!), Sweet Potato and Cajun. And, if you’re not ready for the boozy part of the night to be over, we highly recommend getting a milkshake and adding a shot of Bailey’s or Kahlua to it for $32 – Cookies & Cream and Bailey’s might be a bit much as far as sweetness overload goes, but it pairs real well with Cajun chicken wings!

十八座狗仔粉 – Doggie’s Noodles, siu mai, fish balls and more, 24/7 in Central

Squashed between other restaurants and convenience stores, this street food spot is easy to miss – unless it’s past midnight and everyone in LKF has got the munchies, in which case you can’t not see the line outside. Technically the signature dish is the Doggie’s Noodles, but in our tipsy stupor, you’ll find us getting spicy deep fried siu mai and fish balls for takeaway, then immediately plopping down on the curb outside to scarf down our hot snacks. It has also just introduced a new ‘icy spicy’ squid dish, so you better believe we’re adding that to the order the next time we’re (carefully) making our way down the LKF slope.

Sonny’s Slice Shop – Grab pizza by the slice late at night

Lamenting the closure of Paisano’s Pizzeria in Hollywood Road? Never fear, Sonny’s got you! Tips & Tricks For Visiting A Hong Kong Cha Chaan Teng

• You might not be seated until your whole party is here. If there’s a long queue, eateries will prioritise seating whole parties that are fully present so that you don’t occupy a table instead of a full group.
• Know what you want before you sit down. Service moves quickly, and staff will often come to take your order within moments of you sitting down. Menus can be a mix of Chinese characters and charmingly quirky English translations, so it helps to have a few dishes in mind beforehand.
• Remember to bring cash. While more cha chaan tengs are beginning to accept cards and digital payments, many old-school spots still operate on a cash-only basis or use local payment apps such as Alipay.
• Expect a different service from the usual. This isn’t to mean service is bad, but for locals, efficiency makes the service, rather than chitchatting. Once you understand the rhythm, it becomes part of the charm — and your meal will likely arrive piping hot in just a few minutes.
• Vary the time of day to have a different experience. Certain eateries specialise in breakfast, where the lines tend to be longest. If they serve breakfast all day, it’s a good idea to head over late afternoon or tea time to experience the food at a slower pace — you’re less likely to be rushed out here too!
• Expect to share a table. Communal seating is completely normal and part of the wonderfully fast-paced rhythm of dining in Hong Kong.
• Wash your utensils first. In many cha chaan tengs, a pot or cup of hot tea will appear at your table shortly after you sit down and it is often used to rinse utensils before eating. We don’t recommend drinking this tea!
• Be mindful of your dining time. Leisurely brunches don’t exist at a cha chaan teng. Once you’ve finished eating, it’s a good idea to free up your table as part of respect towards the establishment.
