Internal Balance — Nutrition & Dietary Strategies To Keep Cool

pouring lemon water beside the pool in hong kong summer

Hydration Is Your Summer Superpower

We all know the drill — drink water. But when you are sweating continuously in 90% humidity, your body loses vital minerals and electrolytes (like sodium and potassium). Relying only on plain water can sometimes dilute your system, leaving you feeling sluggish.

  • Mineralise your fluids: Mix up your water intake with coconut water, unsweetened electrolyte drinks like Pocari Sweat or a pinch of pink Himalayan salt in your bottle.
  • Frozen nutrient cubes: Freeze fruits like grapes, watermelon chunks or berries. They act as all-natural, ice-cold ice cubes for your water and double as a vitamin-rich, cooling snack.

Sassy Tip: Carry a reusable insulated water bottle so your drink stays cold all day. You can refill them at many MTR stations at no cost — a lifesaver when the MTR platform starts to feel like a sauna!

coffee with herbal jelly, a cooling property in traditional chinese medicine that is good for hong kong summer

Understanding ‘Yeet Hay’ & Local Heat Clearing

If you spend any time talking to Hong Kong locals, you’ve definitely heard the phrase ‘yeet hay’ (熱氣). A cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it translates to “internal heat” — a state of bodily imbalance triggered by hot weather and certain foods that can manifest as a sore throat, mouth ulcers or irritability. To keep your internal ecosystem balanced, try to limit and indulge in the below foods.

“Heaty” (Limit) “Cooling” (Indulge)
Spicy & deep-fried foods, burgers Cucumber, winter melon, bitter gourd
Coffee, alcohol Barley water, chrysanthemum tea
Lychees, mangoes, durian Watermelon, mung bean soup, citrus
  • Hit The Herbal Tea Shop: Pop into a neighbourhood herbal tea shop (like Hung Fook Tong or a traditional street-side stall) and ask for “Five Flower Tea” (Ng Fa Cha) or sugarcane juice, which are formulated to clear damp summer heat.
  • Guilt-Free Sweet Treat: Try the local dessert grass jelly (leung fan) for a light and refreshing treat that’s not only low in calories but also prized in TCM for its heat-clearing properties.

Fitness & Exercise — Physical Adjustments To Beat The Heat

Time Your Workouts & Track Hong Kong’s Air Quality Index

Hong Kong’s midday sun can be brutal, so schedule outdoor workouts for early mornings (before 8am) or cooler evenings (after 6pm).

  • Check The Indices: Before heading out, check the Hong Kong Observatory app for temperature, the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) and the Heat Stress Index. High humidity prevents your sweat from evaporating, meaning your body can’t actually cool itself down naturally.
  • Take It Indoors: When the air is too heavy, swap out the outdoor run for yoga, dance or Pilates — you’ll still get your sweat on, without feeling like you’re simmering in a hotpot.
  • Visit Your Local Pool: Another sweat-free exercise option is doing laps in a public swimming pool — or better yet, securing a day-pass to a hotel pool!

Cool Down Fast With Pulse Point Tricks

When you come inside from the sweltering streets and feel dizzy or overheated, your body is basically asking an immediate circuit-breaker to lower its core temperature.

  • The 30-Second Reset: Run your wrists under cold tap water or press a cold drink can to the back of your neck or your temples. These areas feature large blood vessels close to the skin’s surface. Cooling them rapidly helps chill the blood flowing back through your circulatory system, lowering your overall body temperature fast.
  • At-Home Cool Down: Best case scenario, you can aways opt for a quick cold shower or soaking your feet in cold water, both of which can help lower your body temperature almost instantly.

Sleep Health — Environmental Changes To Halt Humidity

soft cotton bedsheets for hong kong summer

Overcoming The Cycle Of Summer Fatigue

Ever notice how you can feel completely exhausted in Hong Kong summer, even if you haven’t done much? The body exerts an ton of metabolic energy just trying to keep your temperature regulated at 34°C. Combine that with poor sleep from a humid bedroom, and you have a recipe for chronic fatigue!

  • The Cotton Shield: Swap out any synthetic bedsheets for 100% long-staple cotton, eucalyptus or bamboo sheets. Synthetics trap body heat, turning your bed into an oven.
  • The Fan Trick: Instead of blasting your A/C at a freezing 18°C all night (which dries out your respiratory tract so you’ll wake up with a scratchy throat), set your A/C to a gentle 23°C–24°C and pair it with a circulating room fan. The fan moves the cool air efficiently, so you can sleep comfortably without draining your energy or your electricity bill.

Skin Ailments — Managing Summer Skin Problems

applying lotion to legs to avoid heat rash in hong kong summer

Soothing Heat Rash & Prickly Heat Safely

While it’s not the most glamorous health topic, heat rash is lowkey a rite of passage during a scorching Hong Kong summer. It happens when your sweat ducts become blocked and sweat gets trapped beneath the skin, causing itchy, red clusters.

  • Refrigerated Aloe Vera: Keep a tub of pure aloe vera gel in the fridge. Applying it cold to areas of itchiness provides instant, anti-inflammatory relief to angry skin. Best of all, giant tubs usually retail for just $20 at $30 at local affordable beauty retailers like Lung Fung.
  • Look For The ‘AD’ Symbol: Pick up a tube of Mentholatum AD Cream from Watsons or Mannings — the ‘AD’ stands for anti-itch/anti-dermatitis, and these formulas are dermatologically designed to calm rashes and irritation without using heavy, greasy lipids that block your pores further.

Sassy Tip: If a heat rash becomes painful, oozes or spreads rapidly, skip the home remedies! Instead, consult your local pharmacist, who can recommend over-the-counter hydrocortisone or specialised topical ointments.

Phu Quoc’s busier stretches get all the attention. But tucked away from the crowds is a quieter, more spectacular side of the island that seasoned travellers have been guarding like a secret.

Even a decade ago, Phu Quoc was known only to the most seasoned of travellers. In recent years, however, the Vietnamese island has seen a sharp rise in popularity, recording 4.7 million tourists in the first five months of 2026, according to the country’s newspaper VNExpress. Meanwhile it’s easier than ever to fly to Phu Quoc directly from Hong Kong in less than 3 hours, with airlines such as HK Express, Sun PhuQuoc Airways and Vietjet Air offering multiple direct flights weekly.

The downside of this growing appeal and accessibility, of course, is that the island is becoming increasingly busy. Yet so far, the southwest coastline retains its understated charm — and it is here that La Veranda Resort Phu Quoc — MGallery is located. This five-star property has managed to curate a rare, unhurried energy that is exactly what you need to unwind.

A Place That Welcomes The Slower Pace Of Life

Inspired by the spirit of a 1920s French colonial seaside mansion, the resort wears its heritage with confidence. While many luxury resorts increasingly compete on showmanship, La Veranda Resort Phu Quoc — MGallery has intentionally gone the other way, choosing quietness over spectacle. This sensibility seeps into every corner, from its louvred shutters and curated antiques to the handwritten welcome notes that are far from perfunctory. Here, the slower pace of life is actively encouraged, whether that means roaming through the shaded verandahs or stopping to smell the flowers in the tropical garden. It is this intentional slowing down and peaceful stillness that leaves the most lasting impression on its guests.

A Perfect Backdrop For An Epic Romance

If it’s romance you are after, you will find La Veranda Resort Phu Quoc — MGallery exudes it fully through its setting, architecture and design. Be it seaside candlelit dinners, slow evenings on the verandah or barefoot walks along the shore, each moment feels unforced and completely natural. The mood starts the moment you wake up in an Ocean Suite, where uninterrupted sea views make lingering in bed a very sensible choice. Whether the visit is a honeymoon, an anniversary or a long-overdue escape for two, this luxury resort in Phu Quoc has a way of making everything feel unhurried and intentional. What’s more, the resort also has a Romance Concierge, a dedicated person who can craft bespoke couple experiences for anniversaries, proposals and other celebrations.

What To Know About Getting A Piercing In Hong Kong

  • Do some research before getting pierced — about the type of piercing, how you will be pierced (say, with a piercing gun or needle plus the method of piercing!), and the expected pain and time it’ll take to heal.
  • Eat something before you go. It keeps your blood sugar steady so you won’t get dizzy or faint. And try to get a good night of sleep.
  • Have your piercer walk you through the way you’ll be pierced and show you how everything is sterilised. Discuss placement and the first jewellery you’ll be fitted with and when you can change the jewellery. It’s worth paying more for titanium or gold for your piercing, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Expect a little pain! Better to be mentally prepared and ready than to be shocked.
  • Aftercare is so important. A piercing is a wound and infections can lead to scarring on the face and body. Be sure to consult your piercer about their recommended ways of cleaning and disinfecting your piercing, and how to take care of it. If you’re unsure, reach out to them after with any updates and don’t be afraid to ask “silly” questions — like their favourite products and methods!
  • Don’t worry if you see a little bleeding or irritation, but keep an eye out for discolouration; secretion of white, yellow or green fluid; heat; swelling and excessive pain.

EstheClinic is one of Hong Kong’s favourite med spas for a reason — the French family business was built on painless treatments, no hard sell and a director who really listens.

EstheClinic has been in Solène Verrot’s extended family for over twenty years. Founded in France by her cousin-in-law, Manon Allano, the med spa has grown into a beauty empire across continents. Prior to entering the family business, Solène had an enviable career of her own — law, then advertising — but when the opportunity came to bring the French brand to Hong Kong in 2019, she took it. Today, Verrot and her husband manage three EstheClinic locations across the city, building on its reputation as a painless beauty powerhouse.

The French Blueprint That Survived Covid

EstheClinic started over twenty years ago in France, building a name for itself by offering clients visible results without surgery. Solène brought that same blueprint to Hong Kong, opening her first clinic just months before the pandemic hit. While other businesses struggled to remain open, Solène spotted an opening — lower rent meant she could launch the Sai Ying Pun ground-floor branch. That move turned a business-crushing circumstance into an opportunity and (spoiler alert), all three locations continue to thrive today.

What Sets EstheClinic Apart In Hong Kong

As for what’s made EstheClinic survive — through Covid, but also within Hong Kong’s saturated beauty market —  Solène believes it comes down to local customers refusing to settle. Hongkongers are known for keeping up-to-date on the latest trends, comparing clinics across cities and clocking it when if something feels off. In a culture of hard selling, with quick assessments, pressure to buy and little focus on the actual client experience, EstheClinic flips that model. The dedicated, English-speaking team begins each treatment by listening to what’s really going on with their clients: trained to deliver the highest standard of care, the consultants and beauticians know that surface-level skin concerns often reveal something deeper, whether that be stress or major life transitions.

Prioritising Results Over Sales Pitches

Because of Solène’s model, EstheClinic is known for its client relationships. There’s no pressure to buy and no awkward sales pitch at the end of your session. Instead, clients receive genuine care,  backed by a team that follows through on every concern and explains what’s realistic.

Whether you’re looking for face and body treatments or permanent hair removal, treatments at EstheClinic are painless and built to last. Experience it for yourself with our exclusive Sassy readers perk:
